I Tried the Body Shop Sleep Range for a Week – and Here’s What Happened

The new Body Shop Sleep range has landed in stores this month – and it’s been lavender for days.

A few years after the rage that was the Lush Sleepy Cream phase, and the Body Shop has dropped a load of its own sleep products as part of its new wellness line – along with body and hair wash , body scrub, pillow mist, and more.

And yes, they all smell deliciously of lavender.

How does the Body Shop sleep range work?

According to the Body Shop, their new wellness line is infused with powerful essential oils, crafted into three unique blends. All products are infused with lavender from the plateaus of Haute-Provence and vetiver from Madagascar, without fertilizer or irrigation.

They also all come in sustainable packaging, using mostly natural ingredients, and are completely vegan – so a solid shout out to all if you’re on the hunt for new sleep products.

What is the history of sleep aid products in general?

People have been using sleep products for decades. Whether it’s an essential oil to fill a room or a nasal strip to stop snoring, we’ve always been interested in our sleep habits and how to improve them.

Where some enjoy long, uninterrupted nights of sleep each night, others struggle to get a good number of hours. Add to that the Covid pandemic and you have whole new reams of people experiencing sleep-related issues due to new stresses and anxieties that may not have existed before March 2020.

According to Maxime Elbaz, doctor of neuroscience and sleep and e-health specialist at the European Sleep Centre, having a bedtime ritual is a surefire way to promote better, deeper sleep.

“Forming new bedtime habits and rituals is the only way to reset our sleep cycles,” she says. “If ‘sleep rehabilitation’ measures are not put in place, in the future we will see the emergence of more sleep problems such as insomnia leading to psychological frailty such as anxiety and depression.

Elsewhere, some studies have shown that herbal products like lavender can allow the body to relax, allowing for deeper, more relaxed sleep. Research in 2005 found that the use of lavender oils led to increased deep sleep and reduced awakenings in both men and women who used them, although this is worth nothing as no definitive conclusions can be drawn. be drawn on the long-term use and the results of the aroma.

How did the range work for me?

Among the products of the new range that I have tried are the Sleep Relaxing Hair & Body Wash (€18.50), the Sleep Essential Oil Blend (€27.50), the Sleep Balmy Body Cream (€39) and the Sleep Calming Pillow Mist (€27.50). ).

The Body Shop has its own ideas of how the range should be used, but here’s how I attempted to drift into a deep, relaxing haze on a recent Sunday evening.

Drawing a bath, I soaked in it for a good 45 minutes with a book in my hand and Sleep Body Wash all over my body. Upon emerging, I slathered on Sleep Body Cream, put Sleep Essential Oil in my diffuser to fill the room with lavender scent, before spraying a nice amount of Pillow Mist all over my sheets.

By far my favorite of the line was the pillow spray. A few sprays of this on my pillows (and let’s be honest, all over my sheets, I’m greedy), and I was sure to settle in for a delicious nap. It was also one of four products that I found myself using regularly throughout the week, on days when I didn’t have a bath or was too tired to do a full body hydration.

During the week, I noticed that my sleeps were considerably deeper and that I had fewer dreams, or at least, fewer dreams that I can remember. I wasn’t waking up at night as much as usual, but if that was due to sleep range or my own general winter fatigue, who can tell for sure?

The products are a bit pricey so chances are you won’t buy the whole range on a whim – but if you fancy trying just one to see what difference it makes, let me recommend you pillow mist or essential oil. You’ll get a fair amount of product from both, and they’re an easy addition to any sleep ritual you have going.

The Sleep range hasn’t entirely changed my sleeping experience, but the ritual of settling down to use clean, beautifully scented products after a long, busy day may have been enough to make my nights a little more relaxing.

The new Sleep range from The Body Shop is available to buy in store now.
