Body shape is all about proportion, and fashion is about dressing up those proportions to look their best.

Each of us has our unique form. Our body shapes are reduced to five categories, pear, wedge, rectangle, apple and hourglass. You can belong to one category or be a mixture of two or more categories. Once you know your body shape, you can determine which fashion trends to follow. Here are some tips to follow.

  1. pear shaped

For pear-shaped people, the lower body is wider than the upper body. Your bottom is rounded and your waist is well defined.

When dressing for this shape, you should emphasize your waist and arms as these are your best assets. Play with sweetheart, scoop or plunging neckline. Try interesting hemming on dresses that slim the hips and thighs, like the hi-lo trend or a tulip skirt.

  • Try A-Line Skirts
  • Keep the hems of pants, skirts and dresses wide to balance the hips.
  • Experiment with light-colored tops and dark-colored bottoms for contrast.
  • Look for boatneck tops, square necklines and cowl necks.
  • Wear strapless dresses to show off the arms and even out the proportions.
  • Try styles with ruffles on top.
  • Wear jackets that hit just above the waist.
  • Opt for pointed-toe shoes to elongate your legs.

2. Wedge shape

Also known as an inverted triangle, this silhouette features a wide chest and broad shoulders with a narrow waist and hips. Accentuate your lower body while softening your shoulders and upper body.

  • Wear bright colors downstairs.

  • WEAR loose skirts.
  • DO NOT wear spaghetti strap tops.
  • DO NOT wear boat neck tops.
  • Experiment with high-waisted styles.
  • Look for clothes that create the illusion of a waistline.

3.Rectangle body shape

For rectangle or ruler body types, create curves and show off your slender legs and arms. A sweetheart neckline is recommended as it adds some curve. A pencil skirt with a side slit shows off your legs and adds visual interest. Building dimension on a straight body type can mean wearing belts to define the waist and layering items like accessories or tops. A great alternative to a dress for a rectangle shaped body would be the crop top and skirt sets that are currently in fashion.

  • Wear scoop and sweetheart neck tops to create curves.
  • Wear long jackets to create a slim look.
  • Wear tops with collars, ruffles and detailing to flatter your chest.
  • Wear a good bra that will make the most of what you have.
  • DO NOT wear overwhelming styles.
  • DO layer to add more dimensions.
  • Wear ruched dresses. The straps on the sides are ideal.

4. Apple shape

Apple-shaped bodies have a fuller, rounder torso with minimal waistline. Most of your weight is above the hips. It is important to lengthen your body. Choose dresses that have necklines that elongate your figure, like the V-neck. Dresses with an A-line. One way to create a waistline and draw attention away from the midsection is to wear a structured jacket with a dress. Lengthen your torso and show your legs.

  • Opt for monochromatic looks.
  • Opt for V-neck tops to create the illusion of a longer torso.
  • WEAR a bra that provides good support and support.
  • Wear belts at the smallest part of your waist.
  • Wear empire tops and dresses.
  • WEAR bootcut and flared jeans to create an even line from the shoulders down.
  • Wear shorter skirts to show off your legs and draw attention away from your midsection.

5. Hourglass shape

Balance, balance, balance is the key to choosing an hourglass-shaped body! Maintain fuller bust proportions even with fuller hip and thigh proportions. Look for dresses that have a fitted top half and hug your waist to avoid adding bulk. As with those with apple-shaped bodies, hourglass-shaped bodies should wear dresses with v-necks or sweetheart necklines to slim the bust. Make sure to show off your curves.

  • Wear a waist belt to show off your hourglass shape.

  • Opt for high waisted skirts.

  • WEAR skinny or straight jeans.
